FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does the World Hunger Map really symbolize?

This engaging worldmap illustrates the approximate frequency and location of hunger-related deaths in our world. Whenever a you see a burst of light, it symbolizes that someone has just died from hunger in that area of the world. The illustration is based on the statistics that 24,000 (plus) people die of hunger each day (see About Hunger), which is equivalent to one death every 4 or less seconds. Statistical data from the United Nations is used to determine the relative frequency of hunger deaths in each of the 32 countries with the highest hunger mortality.

This video image map was custom created for World Legacy using an actual photo of the planet earth taken from outer space, digitized by LivingEarth.com (see Our Partners) specifically for the purpose of illustrating our mission to eliminate world hunger now. It serves as a living, breathing illustration that 'above all' we are all global neighbors in the noticeable absence of political, cultural or geographical boundaries. If you are unable to see this inspiringly beautiful map simply download a free Shockwave viewer to enable viewing by clicking here (download will take 10 to 20 minutes, and will add to your general web surfing enjoyment immeasurably). For those with much older browsers and/or computers we also have a regular worldmap showing alternative related information.

What happens when I click on the "Click to Feed a Child" button?

When you click on the button, your click registers with our click-counting software. The computer adds your food donation to the day’s totals. In that same moment the computer sends you the pop-up "Thank You For Your Donation" page. This page shows you the name of the sponsor or sponsors who made the food donation on your behalf. To learn more about the power of your 'click', and more about the power of sponsoring, please visit Donation Totals.

Why doesn't it cost me anything?

There is absolutely no charge to you for the donation; it is totally paid for by the sponsors. This is because, as you will notice on the Thank You For Your Donation page, they are happy to support a worthy cause while at the same time introducing themselves to you and extending an invitation to you to visit their website. Sponsors write a check directly to World Food Programme for 100% of the amount due for the donations generated by clicks on this site. See About Sponsors to learn more about 'your' sponsor, and to meet all our current and former sponsors.

How often can I click?

You can click once every day. A convenient way to do this is to bookmark the homepage of worldlegacy.org as one your favorites. Please click here for instructions. Or you can make the WorldLegacy homepage the page that automatically appears first, every time you open your browser. Click here for instructions. It is powerful to think that for every four seconds it takes you to click-to-feed, in that amount of time you may prevent a death.

Can I just keep clicking on the "Click to Feed a Child" button and make several donations?

Our agreement with our sponsors allows us to count one donation from you each calendar day. Any more clicks that you make that day are not counted. Each new calendar day starts at midnight United States Pacific Standard Time, (where we are located) -- which is 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). A click-tracking system (per visitor per day) is set up to record this. It is a very accurate system for the purpose of counting only -- no other info is electronically 'harvested'.

Do I really accomplish much by clicking every day? Is it worth the effort?

There are two answers to this question; both are emphatically, yes. The first is relative. What is your participation worth, relatively speaking? For one of the 4 million mothers in Ethiopia (pictured here) -- powerlessly watching her child starve to death as you are reading this -- the food that you help provide is 'worth' inestimable value. Somwhere there is a child dying of hunger every few seconds, those are the same seconds you could be providing a meal.

The second is literal. What is your participation worth, literally speaking? The cumulative effect of tens of thousands of people participating to donate food every day is so powerfully worthwhile, it is almost beyond belief. Imagine this, you have the power to click-donate one meal to one starving child, it would only take 24,000 people clicking here today to eliminate the estimated 24,000 deaths occurring today due to starvation. It is entirely feasible for this modest website alone to have many hundreds of thousands of people visiting it every day. Emphatically yes, together we definitely have the power to eliminate world hunger.

Do I really accomplish much by becoming a sponsor? Is it worth the effort?

Every sponsor donating per click-donations makes a mind boggling contribution. Aside from the invaluable company visibablity, goodwill etc. that you generate on your own behalf, here a realistic example of what you accomplish for others --
On a day that there are 6 sponsors and people click 200,000 times, there will be a total of 200,000 donations of 1 1/2 cups of food. This is about 17 (metric) tons of food, or 17,012 kilos. In non-metric terms, this is about 18.8 tons of food, or 37,500 pounds.

From this you can see what a difference each sponsor makes. On a day with 200,000 click-donations, each additional sponsor contributes about 2,836 kilos or 6,250 pounds of food – roughly 3 tons of food.

How is the sponsor donated food distributed?

The donated food is distributed through the United Nations World Food Programme, the world’s largest food aid organization, with projects in 82 countries, including those in Africa, Asia and South America. They also work in conjunction with a number of other relief organizations (see About Hunger for more info and other hunger relief efforts).

What kind of food is provided?

World Food Programme selects the most appropriate and transportation- suitable food to distribute in any given country or situation. Grains such as rice, wheat, and maize are the most common choices, being the staple foods for most of the world’s population. These are all sources of complex carbohydrates and protein. Other basic foods that are important staples in many cultures include beans, millet, barley, and sorghum, a cereal grass (being distributed in this photo).

How much food is donated?

Please see Donation Totals to see our site totals, and totals from countries around the world. The amount of food you donate each day depends on two factors: how many sponsors there are for that day, and how much each sponsor has pledged to donate. Each sponsor donates a minimum of s 1/4 cup of food per click - which is one meal. However if there are 4 sponsors, then you are donating 1 cup of food. When there are 10 sponsors, then you are donating 2 1/2 cups. When you see one individual sponsor on your Thank You Page a minimum of 1 cup of food for every click is being donated. Your Thank you page will usually say. At the very least, with every click you make, one meal is provided, more likely more than that.

What is in it for sponsors?

Why are the sponsors willing to pay for food donations on your behalf? Our sponsors pay for the donations as a method of company promotion and public relations which serves a worthwhile cause. Sponsors also view it simply as very effective advertising in the same way that shows on public television are funded by corporate sponsors, or any corporate donation to a worthy cause. Promoting "Corporation Causes" enable them to achieve many positive purposes at once: to get their name in front of people, to be associated with a positive cause, and to generate good will towards their company. Sponsors write a check directly to World Food Programme for 100% of the amount due for the donations generated by clicks on this site. See About Sponsors to meet our current and former sponsors.

How much do the sponsors pay for the food that I donate when I click?

Each sponsor on the "Thank You For Your Participation" note pays one half cent per donation. This half cent buys food that, when cooked, is equal to a quarter cup of food. Thus, if there are 2 sponsors on the page, they combine to pay for a half cup of food per donation. If there are 4 sponsors on the page, they combine to pay for one cup of food per donation. If there are 6 sponsors on the page, they combine to pay for one and a half cups of food per donation, and so on. In addition to the quarter cup of food, the half cent also covers the relief organization’s necessary overhead and most of the transportation cost of the food, as described below. It is our hope and goal to continually increase the amount of food that we together are able to donate.

In simple arithmetic here is how the cost is calculated for 2 sponsors combining to pay for one half cup of food. Each sponsor pays a half cent, so combined they pay 1 cent. Of that 1 cent, approximately 66% pays for the food itself, 10% pays for the relief organization’s overhead, and 24% goes toward the transportation of the food.

What does the food actually cost?

To provide one half cup of food to a hungry child costs about two thirds of one cent, in U.S. Dollars. Amazed at how little it takes? Here is how this is figure was determined. The average price for staple foods per metric ton was $231.07 in 1998 and $236.46 in 1997, according to published United Nations statistics. This yields a two year average of $233.77 per metric ton. A metric ton is 1 million grams, or 35,270 ounces at the standard conversion of .03527 ounces per gram. This gives a price of .663 cents per ounce, or about 2/3 of a cent per ounce of food. According to the USDA serving formula for staple grains, each serving of one half cup of cooked food is equivalent on average to one ounce of uncooked food, so one half cup of cooked food costs about 0.66 of one cent, or .663 cents to be exact. Knowing this it becomes easier to understand how we can easily we can actually eliminate world hunger.

The relief organization delivering the food has necessary overhead expenses. For this we allot 0.10 cents, about 15% of the food cost and 10% of the total cost. Then there are transportation costs, which vary widely depending upon where the food is purchased and how far and by what method it has to be shipped. We currently allot 0.24 cents for transportation, about 35% of the food cost and 24% of the total cost. This covers the transportation costs in some instances and helps to defray it in others. These calculations yield a total cost of slightly over $350. per metric ton of food ($352.70 to be exact), including overhead and part or all of the transportation as described here.

How do you get sponsors?

Usually we are contacted as a result of our site visitors recommending us to potential sponsors (by printing out our sponsor page and sending it to prospective sponsors) or our visitors become sponsors themselves. Sometimes a sponsor will contact us as a result of hearing about us through a visitor having written an article in a newsletter, a letter to the editor etc., or because they have heard of our efforts in some other (usually donated) free media publicity related way. Word of mouth is our best means. The second most clicked-on item in the site (after the Click to Feed a Hungry Child button) is the "Send This Page To a Friend" feature on our homepage.

The more sponsors we have, the more food you will be able to give each time that you click on the "Click to Feed a Child" button. Your help is appreciated more than we could ever adequately express, we could not succeed without you

Is this a Nonprofit Organization?

World Legacy is not currently a nonprofit organization. Our development plans include becoming a registered Nonprofit Foundation in order to offer tax-free-donation benefits to our sponsors, however we take no profit from our sponsors either way. In order to chart our course in this direction we chose our domain name to reflect this distinction -- WorldLegacy.org (.org being the traditional domain registration naming convention for nonprofit organizations, humanitarian foundations etc.) Today we think of ourselves as a web site whose goal is to enable freedom from hunger. World Legacy was developed and is maintained and operated by SuccessKey.com -- whose mission is to enable success. Please visit our About Us page for more information.

Can I make a financial donation directly to World Legacy?

World Legacy itself does not accept financial donations for food. 100% of the donation money that is generated through World Legacy goes directly where it is intended -- to eliminate world hunger. What else can I do in the big picture, to help end world hunger?

Click on Good Works! to learn about additional (free) ways you can lend support. Besides the larger international hunger relief organizations, your Chamber of Commerce or any church in your area will probably be able to refer you to local hunger organizations that do excellent work and need volunteers. Remember that many organizations are helping to end hunger by working at the root level to reduce poverty, illiteracy, and other social problems. It is a rewarding experience to feel how gratefully these organizations appreciate any help that you could give them. You may also be surprised to learn that 1 in 10 American children go hungry everyday, and that the number of 'food insecure' homes in the U.S. -- the only industrialized country in the world with widespread hunger -- is alarming with 31 million people at risk..

Volunteering online is a powerful new concept. www.netaid.org, dedicated to eradicating extreme world poverty through the power of the Internet, has recently launched online volunteering. This exciting site, developed by Cisco (the people who pioneered the Internet) offers lots of creative ways you can help, including shopping online at the International Handicrafts Bazaar in support of poverty challenged villages around the world.

This photo is of two orphaned Kosovo children as they wait for the food delivery truck. In the big picture of eradicating world hunger you can have your voice heard at the United Nations by signing the Year 2000 Manifesto along with millions of others, including Nobel Prize Laureates. The United Nations has designated The Year 2000 - Culture of Peace Year. If you feel moved, please link over to read the six objectives of the manifesto and to sign this worldwide petition which will be presented in September, 2000 to the United Nations Conference in New York City. These fine objectives include: sharing our planets resources with others, respecting all life, and preserving the planet.

What's the Bottom Line About Ending World Hunger?

Believe it or not, it is not the availability of food resources on the planet. Right now we have enough food available to feed every man woman and child several pounds of food a day. "It is the way people think about hunger that is the greatest obstacle to ending it," says Peter Rosset, director of Institute for Food and Development Policy, California, USA, in his recent book titled HUNGER MYTHS.

To deprogram some of our own unfounded thoughts about world hunger, you may enjoy taking our Interesting Hunger Quiz, perhaps even printing it out and putting it to good use in a learning situation.
