The United Nations World Food Programme -
The Receiving Hand of The World Legacy Donations
 The
World Food Programme (WFP) is the frontline UN organization fighting
hunger and it is the world’s largest food aid organization. In 1998,
WFP delivered 2.8 million metric tons of food aid to nearly 75 million
people in emergencies and long-term refugee operations and development
projects. WFP has emergency and development projects in 80 countries
worldwide and a staff of more than 5,000, over half of whom are employed
on a temporary basis.
Eradicating hunger, which
afflicts one in every seven people on earth, cannot be achieved without
creating conditions that help people become self-reliant. WFP uses food
aid as a vital catalyst in development activities that promote self-reliance
and forever break the cycle of inherited poverty among the poorest of
the poor bypassed by opportunity and mainstream development.
WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME'S
MISSION:
1.
To save the lives of people caught up in humanitarian crises, through
Food-For-Life.
2. To support the most vulnerable people
at the most critical times of their lives, through Food-For-Growth.
3. To help children
become educated through food reward (often feeding their families as
well) through Food-For-School.
4. To help the hungry poor become self-reliant
and build assets, through Food-For-Work.
WFP is winning the fight to eradicate world hunger -- whether it is
the hunger that suddenly afflicts people fleeing ethnic conflict in
Rwanda or Bosnia or the chronic hunger that affects the hungry poor
in countries such as Bangladesh or India. Thanks to you and your participation
we are achieving our goal of leaving a hunger free World Legacy!

The table above shows the
projected number of donations expected at this site for the first eight
months of operation, as they will look here posted in retrospect from
start of operation. It shows the number of people who will have click-donated
food (by clicking on the button). More detailed information about food
kinds, amounts, weights etc is available on our Frequent
Questions page. Figures will be kept current to the previous day,
as shown. As you can see, the number of click donations is expected
to vary from day to day, tending to be higher on weekdays than on weekends.
The amount of food given with each click depends on the number of sponsors
for any given day.
Each sponsor pays for
1/4 cup of food per donation. If there are 4 sponsors for the day, then
each donation is 1 cup, 5 sponsors is 1 1/4 cup and so on. On a day
that there are 5 sponsors and people make 200,000 donations, there will
be a total of 200,000 donations of 1 1/4 cups of food. This is about
14.2 (metric) tons of food, or 14,176 kilos. In non-metric terms, this
is about 15.6 tons of food, or 31,250 pounds. On a day that there are
6 sponsors and people make 200,000 donations, there will be a total
of 200,000 donations of 1 1/2 cups of food. This is about 17 (metric)
tons of food, or 17,012 kilos. In non-metric terms, this is about 18.8
tons of food, or 37,500 pounds.
From this you can see
what a difference each additional sponsor makes! On a day with 200,000
donations, each additional sponsor contributes about 2,836 kilos or
6,250 pounds of food – roughly 3 tons of food.
